🎶 Cultural Outsider Playlist: Salsa and Afro-Cuban Rhythms Exploring Latin rhythm through a Caribbean lens By Ciara Aritis — MUSI 201 World Music Survey Introduction As someone with Dominican roots and a deep love for Afro-Latin music, I’ve always been fascinated by how rhythm connects people across cultures. Growing up surrounded by Bahamian sounds, I often noticed how Afro-Caribbean music shares a common heartbeat. When I first encountered Salsa and Afro-Cuban music, I was instantly drawn to its intensity, storytelling, and movement. In this blog, I explore five performances spanning from the 1950s to the 2010s.
